Transilvania), qui est composée de trois parties : la Marmatie au nord (Maramureş),Transylvanie centrale au sud est (Ardeal), et la Crisanie à l'Ouest (Crişana) ;
- La Moldavie (Moldova), dont seule la moitié ouest fait désormais partie de la Roumanie ;

Some words about geography...

Romania is encircled by Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, the Republic of Moldova (who doesn't still belong to Romania) and the Black Sea.

There is three historical parts in Romania :
- Transilvania (Transilvania), with three parts: Marmatie in the north (Maramure), central Transylvania in the south (Ardeal), and Crisanie on the West (Crişana) ;
- Moldova (Moldova), which only the west half is now a romanian part ;
- Valachie or " Romanian Country " (ţara Româneasc ), constituted by Olténie on the West (Oltenia), Munténie in the East (Muntenia) and Dobrogée in the East, at the seaside (Dobrogea).
These historical regions don't still have administrative function even if their borders remain anchored in minds. Today Romania is divided into 41 departments, with the municipality of Bucharest in more.

The climate is continental, especially in Valchie and in Moldova. It is more softened in Transylvania.

Concerning the relief, the Carpathianses separate the central transylvain basin of the plain of Moldova. In the south, the Alps of Transylvania delimit the plain of Valachie.

The Danube marks border between Romania with side and Serbia and Bulgaria of other one. He ends with the Hang glider of the Danube, which was declared natural reserve by the UNESCO.

Some words about history...

First, romanians came from the daces peoples, during antiquity. It is Burebista who unified daces tribes between 82 and 44 before Christ. Dacie was won over by Roman empire in 101-106 bf. JC, with Trajan. However, because of the Goths pressure from Germany and from difficulty in defending Dacie, romanians went in south of Danube in 271.

The history continuation is confused. Numerous migrations succeeded one another. That's how little by little, Hungarian migrated eastward without organised resistance. And in the 11th century af. JC, Transylvania become a vassal principality of Hungary.

In the 14th century appear autonomous principalities of Valachie and Moldova.

From the 15th century, a new power began to have an influence on Romanian destiny for several centuries : Turkish of the Ottoman.

In 1600-1601, Michel the Brave (Mihai Viteazul), allowed a short union of the three principalities. But Austria came until Carpathianses and Russian wanted more and more the East.

In the 18th century, France of light inspired Romania with its emancipation and progress ideals.

In 1848,
liberal and nationalist revolutionary  movements often led by intellectuals formed in Paris, were born in Moldova and in Valachie. In 1859, by electing the same colonel Alexandru Ioan Cuza, Moldova and Valachie merged. They formed the old kingdom of Romania. After the four centuries of autonomy under Ottoman influence, the kingdom of Romania became independent of the Ottoman emplire on May 9th, 1877. It was officially born in 1881, under Carol the 1st.

At the end of the first world war, in 1920, under Ferdinand's reign, Romania doubled its territory and its population. Transylvania, until then Hungarian, Bucovine, Bessarabie and a part of Banat were then added. Kingdom of Romania became then Big Romania.

At the beginning of World War II, from 1939 till 1940, Carol II led an authoritarian regime. He struggled against the fascists of the iron nurse and he made guarantee borders of the kingdom by the United Kingdom and France. Hitler, alloyed with Stalin by germano-Soviet pact, considered then Romania as hostile power.

Between 1940 and 1945 a dictatorship took place in Romania. The summer 1940, after the collapse of France, Hitler made Romania return the half of its territory. Bessarabia was then allocated in USSR, Transylvania of the north in Hungary and southern Dobrogée in Bulgaria. Hitler and the iron nurse overturned the king then and changed him for Ion Antonescu. In 1940, alloyed in Nazi Germany, Romania pervaded USSR. His purpose was to recover lands lost one year earlier. In August, 1944, a resistance movement overturned Ion Antonescu. He was judged and carried out at the end of war.

In September 1944, an armistice was signed in Moscow and the Romanian army changed of camp. War was then declared against the Axle. Then, Romania fought with Russian in Transylvania, after in Hungary. Romania was however treated as a conquered country during the agreement of February 10th, 1947. Even if Hungary had to restore Transylvania in Romania, Bessaraby and Bucovina of the North remained soviet and Dobroudja of the South was definitely allocated to Bulgarians. Romania had also to pay important war damage to Moscow and had to accept the the red Army presence on its soil...

6 march 1945, a communist coup d'état had put an end to the resistance government. In 1947, the Popular Republic was proclaimed, after
the forced abdication of the king. A communist dictatorship took place until 1989. These 45 years of totalitarian regime had caused two  million civil deads. During the coup d'état of December 22nd, 1989, the communist president Ceauşescu and his wife were condemned and carried out further to a very controversial trial.

On August 27th, 1991, Republic of Moldova has become independent and it was immediately admitted by Romania.

On March 27th, 2004, Romania has joined NATO.

On the January 1st, 2007, Romania has entered the European Union.

Some words about today's Romania...

Romania lives now a transition period concerning different sectors of society, economy or mentalities. At the same time Romania is very close to religion and to the rural traditions and displays a lot of energy to attain a Western way of life.

Many minorities compose the population, as Hungarian (Hungarian), Roms (Gypsies) and others else.

Romanian economy evolves currently but it makes a country with two different degrees of evolution. Efforts must be made concerning ecology because development has tendency to be made at any price.

Tourism is developed more and more in Romania. There are tourist stations at the seaside of the Black Sea, mountains, castles, wooden churches, middle age cities, Dracula's stories, the Hang glider of the Danube, declared natural reserve by the UNESCO, etc...
